1 Melting points and purity
Saying an impure substance has a “different” or “higher” melting point, without saying it melts over a range of temperatures.
1A pure substance melts (or boils) at one exact, fixed temperature. An impure substance (a mixture) melts over a range of temperatures, usually below the pure melting point.
2“Only a very small minority stated that an impure substance melts over a range of temperatures.” Jan 2021, 1C
Examiners flagged this in 3 exam series, 2020 to 2022

the sample is not pure (it is impure)1
it melts over a range of temperatures, below 135 °C (not at a fixed temperature)1
Common wrong answer: “the melting point is lower” scores only half: the key idea is a range, not one fixed value.
